"Where Do You Want To Go?  "

Scouting opens the doors to Adventure, Fun, Camping, Fun,
Friendship, Fun, Exploring, Fun, and did we mention FUN and at the same time that it breaks down the doors to learning, surviving, abilities, developing leadership skills, and help to eliminate the blockades in front of you!

If you want to "JOIN US" on one of the best journeys of your life,

Read the rest of this page, then Email us.

Scouting reinforces the skills and values you we want to learn,

"WHILE YOU'RE HAVING FUN".

FACTS:

Education
Scouting is designed to promote socially acceptable behavior while arming our young men with the skills and knowledge they need to make wise decisions. Scouts, families and communities are helped through education provided by Scouting on:

Fighting child abuse and substance abuse
Environmental stewardship
Physical and mental health
Setting and achieving goals
Citizenship
Helping others in need, such as fighting hunger
through Troop-sponsored efforts
Career preparation and education

Leadership Skills
Scouting teaches our young men the skills that help prepare them for a lifetime of ethical leadership. Among Scouting alumni are:

Almost 90% of all Senior Class and Student Council Presidents
More than two-thirds of all Rhodes Scholars
More than two-thirds of military academy graduates

Men who were Scouts are more likely than those who have never been
Scouts to:
• Graduate from high school (91% vs. 87%).
• Graduate from college (35% vs. 19%).
• Earn higher annual household incomes ($80,000 vs. $61,000).
• Value family relationships highly (81% vs. 72%).
• Have lifelong friendships (89% vs. 74%).
• Believe helping others should come before one's own self-interest (92% vs. 83%).
* Scouts are more likely than boys who are not Scouts to report they earn mostly A's (25% vs. 17%).

Values

Research conducted by Louis Harris & Associates showed that when a random sample of Scouts was asked what Scouting had taught them, almost nine out of ten responded with the following:

Take better care of the environment (89%)
Get along with others (88%)
Always give your best effort (87%)
Have confidence in yourself (87%)
Set goals for yourself (87%)
Care for other people (86%)
Treat other people with respect (86%)

In addition, Scouts were found to be more likely to:  assume leadership roles in clubs and school organizations put the needs of others before themselves make the most ethical, not necessarily easiest, decisions, and value education and the environment.

Scouting is Fun!

For all Boy Scouts, Camping and the other outdoor experiences are a major part of the Scouting Tradition. You will be a Vital, Planning, and Voting members of what will be the BEST of the BEST, Troop 171 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Do you have a child wanting  to have fun with friends, play team sports, and camp? Then finding out more about Cub Scout Pack 171 is the first step!

The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, Sports and Academics program provides the opportunity for boys to learn new techniques, develop sportsmanship, increase scholarship skills, and have fun. Participation in the program allows boys to be recognized for physical fitness and talent-building activities.

We feel very strongly about "keeping the Outing in Scouting", and we try to hold overnight family campouts every few months.(campouts during the year are different between Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts)  We also like to participaite in parades, district events, and community service projects.

Scouting is a family-centered activity. As such, we always include family in our activities. At each weekly Den meeting, we prefer that at least one parent or guardian attends with their Scout to help him along his advancement trail. For our monthly Pack or Troop  meetings and Campouts, the entire family is invited!  Each Scout and his family should bring their own tent and camping gear.

We also understand that boys may have seasonal activities that conflict with weekly meetings. We believe that while these activies may come and go, Scouting will be with you forever. Therefore, we would rather have you stay in Scouting, but feel comfortable to pursue football, hockey, baseball, or wherever your interests lie. Scouting will still be here for you. Your Den or Troop leader will help you and your parents with your  advancement goals.

How to Join Troop or Pack 171?

Contact  the Troop or Pack Leaders by e-mail , or come on by, when we have our meetings (Please look at  Calendar, or our Activities & Events Page for meeting dates) which are being held in the Scout Hall Building or different places.)* Note that Pack Dens meet sometimes at different places.

Troop 171 draws its membership mainly from the Presque Isle area, but applicants for Scouting can be from anywhere, look for a scouting troop nearest you.

How much Does it Cost?

We have typical dues have  per calendar year, as our charter covers from January 1st to December 30th. The  dues includes annual registration with the Boy Scouts of America and Cub Scouts , and a different fee for  Boys Life magazine subscription . The Dues also cover the Scout's first handbook, neckerchief, and slide. Camping and other activies are paid separately near the time of the event. For district Day Camp  & patches.

"We never stress the cost, but first put the  value of the family and their childern.Having fun, learning skills that will last a life time."

In the 2009-2011 year, we hope to fully fund the program year by selling Trails End popcorn,Pizza Kit Sales or Scout Show Tickets. If we are able to meet our goals, then boys who participiated in the sales may have their dues and other fees covered!

It is important for boys to learn the value of how to earn their own way through Scouting, and Trails End popcorn and other fundraisers are an excellent tool  Collecting Bottles and even a Penny War ! ( Amout % of Sale goes into each scout personal account for them to use throughout the year for camp, uniforms, Charter fees or Boy's Life Magazine.)

Just in matter of weeks of sales a boy has earn enough money for dues and camp fees.

Hard working values that makes them feel good about themselfs.
